Frequently asked questions
Are dogs allowed in the APX?
Dogs are of course welcome in the APX. We ask for your understanding that your four-legged friend is not allowed to enter the LVR Roman Museum and the exhibition rooms in the park and must remain on a leash within the park out of consideration for other people and animals. The meadows directly behind the Hafentempel park entrance offer the opportunity to run around. In the interest of a pleasant stay for all guests, please ask for a bag at the checkout to dispose of your four-legged friend's "business".
Guide dogs or other assistance dogs are permitted and welcome everywhere in the LVR museums, in buildings, exhibition rooms and in catering facilities.
The dog should be identified with an appropriate harness or collar so that the visitor service or other visitors can recognise the dog as a guide or assistance dog.
Ideally, the dog should have a licence proving that it has been trained as an assistance dog. The authorisation certificate must be shown to the visiting service on request.

Going to the APX in a wheelchair?
The APX is largely accessible to visitors with limited mobility. All park paths and historical reconstructions can be reached at ground level. Parts of the city wall are not wheelchair accessible due to the historical construction. The amphitheater can also be explored in a wheelchair via a ramp. The LVR Roman Museum is fully accessible for people in wheelchairs.
Is there a restaurant or café in the APX?
Due to a change of tenant, the Roman restaurant is unfortunately closed until further notice. The museum café in the KaffeeMühle is open. We ask for your understanding.
The café in the lovingly restored KaffeeMühle offers a selection of food and drinks not far from the LVR Roman Museum.

Are there toilets and a changing table in the APX?
On the park grounds you will find toilet rooms at the city center and harbor temple entrances, in the Roman restaurant, at the amphitheater, at the playgrounds and in the LVR Roman Museum. Their location is marked on the sign that you receive at the ticket office when you enter.
By handcart to the APX?
You are welcome to use your own handcart in the park. There are also ten handcarts available at the city center park entrance that you can borrow for your visit to the park. The rental fee is 3 euros per day, plus a 10 euro deposit, which you will get back when you return it in good condition.
The carts are not suitable for transporting children and must be returned at least half an hour before the park closes.
Is it permitted to picnic on the APX meadows?
Picnics are permitted on the APX meadows. Please bring your own utensils and do not leave anything behind out of consideration for other guests. Garbage cans can be found throughout the park. We ask for your understanding that barbecues and open fires are not permitted on the meadows. A spacious barbecue hut is available upon prior reservation. Eating and drinking is not permitted in the LVR Roman Museum and in the exhibition rooms.
Is playing ball allowed on the meadows?
The park's many large meadows offer plenty of space for all kinds of ball games. But please be careful of mole holes. Please bring your own play equipment and be considerate of other visitors who want to enjoy the park in peace. Ball games are not permitted near the historical reconstructions or on the paths.
Do you need special footwear or clothing?
As an open-air museum, the APX is largely exposed to wind and weather conditions. The paths are made of gravel and sand, but are well-developed. The historical reconstructions such as the harbor temple or the amphitheater are also safe to walk on in any weather, provided you move carefully on walkways and stairs. Please make sure your children are protected from the sun on hot days. Sturdy shoes are strongly recommended in wet weather. An umbrella or a waterproof jacket are always a useful addition to your excursion luggage.
In historical clothing at the APX?
After an increasing number of visitors in Roman (and other) costumes, historical costumes have been prohibited for adults in the APX for some time, but not for children. We want to avoid confusion with our authentically dressed actors. That is why our park supervisors, tour guides and the staff at the Roman restaurant are not dressed in Roman clothing.
We ask for your understanding that exceptions will be made, even if individual amateur Romans have quite impressive equipment. We want to ensure that all Roman actors meet the museum criteria.
Is smoking prohibited in the APX?
Smoking is generally permitted in the fresh air in the park. Please do not smoke in the presence of children and other visitors who may be disturbed by this. Smoking is prohibited indoors, in the historical reconstructions and in the LVR Roman Museum. The consumption of cannabis is prohibited on the entire site.
Does parking my car cost anything?
During opening hours, visitors to the APX can park their cars free of charge in the parking lots of the park and the LVR Roman Museum (some with a parking disc). All parking spaces are located directly in front of the respective park entrances.
Can you also swim in the APX thermal baths?
The faithfully reconstructed and heated thermal baths in the Roman hostel of the APX are unique in the world. On special occasions, the complex commissioning of the baths is demonstrated to the public. Unfortunately, today's safety and health regulations do not allow bathing.
Are there any offers in languages other than German?
All text and picture panels in the park offer English and Dutch information in addition to the German texts. Of course, the LVR Roman Museum is also completely multilingual (in German, English and Dutch). In addition, guided tours and hands-on programs are offered in English, Dutch, French, Hungarian and Arabic. Our multimedia guide also offers information in Dutch, English and French. We can hire sign language interpreters for people with impaired hearing.
Please let us know your wishes before your visit.
What can you do if it starts to rain?
Occasional showers cannot be ruled out despite historical connections to Jupiter. The interiors of the Roman reconstructions offer shelter in the event of sudden changes in the weather. Other interesting places to retreat to are the LVR Roman Museum and the pavilions.
Can the APX premises be rented for private parties or events?
The museum café in the KaffeeMühle is a charming place to celebrate and hold meetings. A barbecue hut in the park is available to groups of visitors by prior arrangement. If you would like to hold special events with larger groups in the park or in the LVR Roman Museum, please contact us in advance.
Is there a museum shop in the APX?
In the museum shop in the park entrance to the city center and in the LVR Roman Museum you will find a well-stocked range of souvenirs, books and high-quality replicas of original finds. You can also visit both shops without paying an entrance fee.
When do the Roman weekends take place?
You can find the dates for the Roman weekends in our
events calendar.
