Individual travellers

Individual visitors to the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten (APX) can relax and enjoy their visit to their heart's content. The clearly laid out network of paths invites you to explore the Roman replicas and excavations on an extensive walk under the avenue trees. What was everyday life like in the Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana? What did people do for work and how did they spend their leisure time? A visit to the reconstructed Roman hostel and the craftsmen's houses is like travelling back in time. Here, the life of people around 1,800 years ago takes shape. In the gloomy vaults of the amphitheatre, you can almost feel the tension of the gladiators before their performance in the arena. Small exhibition pavilions scattered around the APX provide information about transport, building trades and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lower German Limes. The original artefacts in the LVR-RömerMuseum show the origins, heyday and decline of the Roman city in all its facets.
We pay special attention to guests with reduced mobility.

Guided tours and workshops

Each tour lasts one hour. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., our guest guides will highlight selected highlights of the Archaeological Park. At 12 noon, there is a guided tour through the history of the Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana in the LVR-RömerMuseum.
Tickets for the open tours can be purchased in the web shop and on the day at the ticket offices on site. Please also check there for information on the topics and meeting points. There is a fee of £2 for adults and £1 for children per tour.
Every first Sunday of the month at 11 a.m., a very special tour awaits you. Here, archaeologists and other scientists report first-hand on a wide variety of topics. They also have a few anecdotes to share. The tour is included in the admission price. You can find the topics in the current event programme.
