Limesfest 2026
Huge Turnout at the Xanten Limesfest
"Salve!" was the greeting heard on June 13 and 14 at the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten (APX), as Romans and visitors alike flocked to the Limesfest in large numbers. Marking the fifth anniversary of the Lower German Limes’ designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, over 400 merchants, craftspeople, and legionaries from six European countries presented a wealth of activities showcasing Roman life over the course of two days.
Around 19,000 visitors embarked on a journey back to the Roman past. Many children arrived with their families to bring life to the hands-on activities at the various stalls; with great skill, they wove bracelets, planed wooden swords, and crafted pieces of jewelry. Guests of all ages took a seat at the *Schola Romana* (Roman school) or put their artistic talents to the test with the Roman *pictor* (painter).
Impressions of the Limesfest 2026
There was plenty to experience in the legionaries' camps, too. Seasoned soldiers shared stories of camp life and their extensive duties within the Roman army, showing interested visitors how meals were cooked on the march and how equipment was maintained. The legionaries also demonstrated their skills in the open areas between the Roman Museum and the amphitheater, where they showcased combat techniques to a large audience and impressively demonstrated the power of Roman artillery. Equestrian displays also drew crowds, highlighting the remarkable discipline of both horse and rider in Roman times. The highlight of the festivities was the *Pompa*—a grand ceremonial procession winding through the avenues of the open-air museum.
The LVR Archaeological Park Xanten extends its sincere thanks to all participants, performers, and guests for a successful 2026 Limesfest!
